  Why Are There So Few Perovskite Ferroelectrics? 
Nicole A. Benedek and Craig J. Fennie  Feature Article - Journal of Physical Chemistry C, 2013
We use a combination of symmetry arguments and first-principles calculations to explore the connection between structural distortions and ferroelectricity in the perovskite family of materials. We explain the role of octahedral rotations in suppressing ferroelectricity in these materials and show that, as the tolerance factor decreases, rotations alone cannot fully suppress ferroelectricity. Our results show that it is cation displacements (“hidden” in Glazer notation) that accompany the rotations, rather than the rotations themselves, that play the decisive role in suppressing ferroelectricity in these cases. We use the knowledge gained in our analysis of this problem to explain the origin of ferroelectricity in R3c materials such as FeTiO3 and ZnSnO3 and to suggest strategies for the design and synthesis of new perovskite ferroelectrics. Our results have implications not only for the fundamental crystal chemistry of the perovskites but also for the discovery of new functional materials.

 Intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling describes the interaction between magnetic and electric polarization through an inherent microscopic mechanism in a single-phase material. This phenomenon has the potential to control the magnetic state of a material with an electric field, an enticing prospect for device engineering. Here, we demonstrate ‘giant’ magnetoelectric cross-field control in a tetravalent titanate film. In bulk form, EuTiO3, is antiferromagnetic. However, both anti and ferromagnetic interactions coexist between different nearest europium neighbours. In thin epitaxial films, strain was used to alter the relative strength of the magnetic exchange constants. We not only show that moderate biaxial compression precipitates local magnetic competition, but also demonstrate that the application of an electric field at this strain condition switches the magnetic ground state. Using first-principles density functional theory, we resolve the underlying microscopic mechanism resulting in G-type magnetic order and illustrate how it is responsible for the ‘giant’ magnetoelectric effect.

Several postdoctoral positions are available in the group of Craig Fennie at Cornell University in the area of the physics and chemistry of complex oxides. In addition there may be an opportunity aimed at a more senior person for a 5-year research associate position. I am particularly interested in, but not limited to, bringing in people with a strong background in one of the following areas: 1) strongly correlated materials (background in DFT is not required), 2) high-throughput, data-mining, global search approaches for structure prediction, and related methods 3) first-principles approaches that work for very large (>100 atom) systems.

 

The group is a highly cross-disciplinary and collaborative group focused on the use of theory to uncover new structurally and chemically complex bulk solids, hetrostructures, and interface materials and will provide exceptional candidates a prime opportunity to work with experimentalists and to develop an independent research direction on a wide range of topics related to materials physics and/or chemistry of complex oxides. Electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory have uncovered a novel mechanism for inducing ferroelectric polarizations in cation ordered perovskites. We outline a materials selection strategy for designing this behavior. The guidelines are based on the octahedral rotations found in the two constituent oxides and the way the perovskite building blocks are interwoven to form the superlattice.

Compressively strained epitaxial (001) EuTiO3 thin films of tetragonal symmetry have been deposited on (001) (LaAlO3)0.29-(SrAl1/2Ta1/2O3)0.71 (LSAT) substrates by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy. Enhancement of the Néel temperature by 1 K with 0.9%compressive strain was revealed. The polar phonons of the films have been investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field by means of infrared reflectance spectroscopy. All three in-plane polarized infrared active phonons show strongly stiffened frequencies compared to bulk EuTiO3 in accordance with first-principles calculations. The phonon frequencies exhibit gradual softening on cooling, leading to an increase in static permittivity. Additional polar phonon with frequency near the TO1 soft mode was detected below 150 K. This mode coupled with the TO1 mode was assigned as the optical phonon from the Brillouin zone edge, which is activated in infrared spectra due to an antiferrodistortive phase transition and due to simultaneous presence of polar and/or magnetic nanoclusters. In the antiferromagnetic phase, we have observed a remarkable softening of the lowest-frequency polar phonon under an applied magnetic field, which qualitatively agrees with first-principles calculations. This demonstrates the strong spin-phonon coupling in EuTiO3, which is responsible for the pronounced dependence of its static permittivity on magnetic field in the antiferromagnetic phase.
